In 1999 I did some work shooting promotional images for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. During my assignment I was honoured and humbled to be granted special permission to shoot the Twelve Apostles from this section of the coastline which is otherwise a closed nature reserve protecting the fairy penguin colony residing there. If you add to that the rapid rate of erosion of the Apostles you can begin to understand how this shot has become an inimitable piece of Australian history. That’s the true power of photography. To get this shot I had to turn up faithfully day after day for weeks, waiting for the right light. Patience is a virtue in life and often one of the hardest to achieve. It is helpful to realise that we are not always in control of our circumstances - only our attitudes to them. So often we can miss our miracles because we get discouraged and give up just before the breakthrough comes. As the sun set, after taking this shot, hundreds of fairy penguins re-emerged from the ocean. I stood there silently on the sand, watching huddles of them waddling joyfully all around me.
